There was a Harvard study done "8 weeks to a better brain" that showed that meditation ACTUALLY GROWS YOUR BRAIN!
Yes - you heard that right. They did a study of people before and after an 8 week meditation practice and MRI's showed that the meditator's grey matter actually thickened!
What is interesting is that this thickening happened in the hippocampus which is the part of the brain known for memory, self awareness and compassion.
Something even weirder happened with these meditator's brains...
The density in the amygdala DECREASED which is the area that plays an important role in stress and anxiety.
So Harvard agrees - meditation can help you become more compassionate and less stressed. There is MRI proof!
Let's try out one simple meditation. If you can do it while you are reading this:
Put your hand on your stomach
Inhale in deeply feeling your stomach expand
On an exhale, use your stomach muscles to push out all of the extra air
This time, allow your inhale to go even deeper.
Repeat for 10 breaths
Did you do it? Look around. Do you notice any difference in how things look, how you feel, what is going on in you brain? This meditation is always effective because it changes your breath pattern TRICKING your nervous system to become more relaxed.
